This 17th-century young Dutch classicist had only one thing on his mind, and that was sex. He devoted his studies to erotic portraits, publications and Prints. In gallery 2.21 in the Rijksmuseum, there is a small exhibition of his work.
Beverland worked on an encyclopaedia of eroticism in the ancient world called The Prostibulis Veterum, but this work was never published. After publishing a provocative treatise in 1679 his career was finished in the Dutch provinces of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland. He was banished.
He moved to London where he made a living as an agent in art, literature and antiquities. But sex was still on his mind. This time he was smarter. He continued his studies in secret. His notes were illustrated with intriguing, erotic cut-out fragments of prints. There are some curious portraits of himself, in one we see a naughty Bad-boy Adrian drawing the bear behind of a statue of Venus.
I think Bad-boy Adrian would have found it interesting to live in 2018 because sex is everywhere. What do you think?
