It's cold in the North East part of the United States. It's so cold that part of the Niagara Falls has frozen. Visiting the Niagara Falls under normal circumstances is impressive because of its size and the power of the water coming down. But now it's like a magical winter wonderland with most of the falls being frozen. So if you are in the neighbourhood go and have a look and let me know what you think of it.

What are the Niagara Falls?

Niagara Falls is actually not one waterfall. There are three falls coming together at the Canadian and US border some 27 kilometres North West of Buffalo, New York. The Bridal Veil Falls, the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls, are called the Niagara Falls together.
The fall has a vertical drop of more than 50 meters and the amount of water that drops over the edge every minute is a whopping 168,000 m3. So with all this power in the water, it's kind of amazing that small parts of the waterfall freezes over.

Can Niagara Falls completely freeze over?

The Niagara Falls froze entirely in the past. But that hasn't happened for a very very long time, and probably it will never freeze entirely again. The reason for this is the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station owned by New York State. This power station prevents the falls from freezing over completely. Even when it is very cold in winter and it look like the falls are frozen the water still flows behind the ice.
